A Whole Lot of DIY’n Going On

Written by Lindsay Ropella

Today’s post is going to be very photo heavy and I make no apologies for that. Eric and I had a random burst of creative energy this past weekend and decided to knock out a few smaller DIY projects we’ve been wanting to get done. None of them are super awesome or inspiring, but I’ve really been enjoying the subtle changes they created to the feel of our home and thought I’d share them all in a quick DIY update!

So remember this weird space I talked about a few weeks back? We had moved the bookshelf that was previously there and didn’t know how to fill this newly sparse space. Many of you provided us with some seriously awesome ideas that got our wheels turning, so we decided to tackle the space last Sunday.

Eric and I went a little DIY crazy and completed quite a few small projects this past weekend. Here is a quick update to show them off!

We played around with ideas like adding a plant, constructing a corner shelf, but we realized we didn’t want anything that touched the floor because we wanted to keep Stella’s bed there. Then I remembered that the previous owners left us a really old-school ladder in the garage…

So naturally we decided to attempt to cut it up and stick it on the wall. We figured it could either look really bad or really neat. Since we are trying to make our home have a little bit of a vintage-modern feel, we thought that if this actually worked it would fit our house really well. And if not we wouldn’t have lost any money, just a little bit of time.

But to our surprise we think we actually like it! The rungs on the ladder created little shelves that right now just hold books, but could be used for magazines or some decor in the future. Best of all this project only took about 2 hours. We just had to cut the ladder down to size, do some sanding so I didn’t get another sliver from it and throw a fit about it like a 2 year old, and then mount it into studs with some tiny L brackets.

What do you think?!

I also decided it was high time to start adding some more decor to our walls. I was originally going to wait until we got wallpaper hung in our laundry room and our bedroom, but I realized that A) we realistically aren’t going to get around to that for a while and B) I can still start to decorate all the other rooms in the meantime.

So Eric and I set off to Goodwill to find some cheap frames. {Side Note: Decent sized picture frames are expensive, ya’ll! I couldn’t bear to spend $2o to $35 for one frame, so we decided to check Goodwill…man do they have some great stuff!} I ended up getting all these frames plus 1 more big one for under $20. Score.

They all came with glass which was great, but they also all were really ugly colors and chipping. I decided to give them a clean look by spray painting them all classic white.

Here are what a few of them looked like after. I went a little print crazy and created about 4 new ones in total for our house, but I guess that’s just one of the curses of being a blogger. #printobsessed

If you don’t remember what our living room looked like before, you can catch a quick recap here.

We also got a new serving tray for the ottoman we built a few months ago. Very exciting, no?

Since I was spray painting all the frames I got from Goodwill, I decided to take the opportunity to spray a few of the frames in our dining room collage as well. You can check out a before here if you don’t remember what it used to look like. When we first originally hung the collage a few months back, I just wasn’t liking it. I couldn’t figure out if it was the arrangement or the frames themselves, but before taking it all down I decided to spray paint a few of the really crazy frames to see if it helped. I spray painted the large one in the middle and two smaller ones in the cream color used in other areas in our dining room.

I think it helped a lot and I like it a lot better now, but I’m still not sold. I considered maybe spraying them all the same cream color, but then I thought that might blend in too much with the wall behind it. Then I considered adding more frames, but I didn’t want the collage to start to get too crazy. What do you guys think? Do you think it looks better now? Any suggestions for really making it pop?

And there you have it! Our DIY updates! I also added some fun prints and frames upstairs in the new guest bedroom, but I thought I would wait to show you those until I do a post on the entire room next week. The futon was supposed to be here Monday, but of course it hasn’t even made it to the store yet. So hopefully it will come early next week so I can do a room reveal at the end of next week, but no guarantees.

In other news the chair we ordered a good week or two after the futon arrived yesterday, and is now gracing our living room and looking quite majestic, if I do say so myself. I will have to throw in some pictures of that next week as well!

Now I’m off to do some more family bonding, shopping, and eating (someone help me). I hope you have a great day and I will catch you back here tomorrow for some weekly confessing!

LOVE everything! I love going on hunts for accessories to really fit a color scheme and make a room pop. Each time I enter Hobby Lobby lately I want to call you!! I LOVE the fames you painted and the prints. I’d put prints in every room if I was as talented as you are. So about the dining room. I’d love to see all the frames the same creamish color. Then what you put in them causes the POP. Maybe even a fun mat behind a few that currently don’t have any mat? I just think all cream would be elegant and cool. And, if you hate it then you could paint some again? (More work, I know).. I also think the bookshelf ladder on the wall is a fantastic idea. You are SO creative.

Thank you! Yes – that’s what I think I’m thinking as well for the frames. Eric is a little scared for me to do that though, so we will see…

I love what you did with the corner space. I really want to do some DYI stuff to our current home, but we will be moving in two years after the hubby retires from the military. So I am biding my time until we get to our forever home.

Thanks! Oh I know what you mean. The first year we were married we lived in an apartment so we obviously couldn’t do much there, so when me moved here my DIY bug was in full swing. I definitely don’t ever want to move now though, considering how much work we’ve put into this house. :)

I love your frame collage!! :) I have a collage on my living wall of some random stuff and thanks to you I feel inspired to maybe take out some of the pictures in the frames to make it look cleaner!

Thank you!! We were busy bees this past weekend. :) I really am liking how everything turned out so much that I’m already trying to decide on my next endeavor. Maybe painting the front door??

The ladder for a book shelf is a GREAT idea. I’ve seen it used horizontally for pictures before, but I like how you changed that up a little. And I completely agree about frames being so ridiculously expensive. I keep telling myself I will go thrifting to finish off our collage wall, just hasn’t happened yet :)

Also, love the Alice in Wonderland quote!

    • http://www.thenewlywednotebook.com Lindsay Ropella

Thank you!! I’ve seen those too!! Since our space was long though we thought we’d try hanging it that way first and see how it looked. :) You will have to go thrifting for frames sometime soon!! I was a little hesitant but really impressed with what I found!

I was wondering if anyone would catch what that quote was from. :) :) One of my favorites!

Girl, I LOVE your DIY projects! all have such a great visual impact. Also, seriously making me regret not grabbing the beat up old ladder on the side of the road Kyle + I saw the other night while walking through the neighborhood- diamond in the rough!

Well, thank you! I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. :) Oh I hate when that happens!! Eric and I passed up a vintage chair the other day because I didn’t know exactly where it would have gone in our home, but now I’m thinking I should have at least just stored it in the basement for a while. You will just have to keep an eye out for another one! ;) Thanks for the comment girly!

Absolutely love what you did! I’m hoping to get some DIY projects done this weekend with my husband! Love watching how much a little thing can change a room!

I love your picture frames! And that ladder looks amazing! What a great idea, Lindsay.

    • http://www.thenewlywednotebook.com Lindsay Ropella

Thanks, Paige! I thought it would either look really cool or really strange…I’m leaning towards the first scenario right now, so that’s a good sign. ;)

Thank you, I really appreciate your comment. That’s definitely the feel we are going for throughout the house, so I’m glad it shows that way (at least in pictures, right?!) ;)
