A DIY Date Night Story + A Combined Giveaway!

Written by Lindsay Ropella

As you all are well aware of by now, Eric and I have taken on quite a few home renovation projects in the short 11 months that we have lived in our new home. When you are working that hard and that closely with someone for that long, things can start to get a little “heated.” And I don’t mean that in the good way.

Here’s a scenario for you:

You are standing out in your backyard after a long day of work, trying to decide on a new layout for the patio you want to put in this summer. You are on your 5th redesign when it suddenly starts to sprinkle. You and your spouse quickly decide to measure your layout so that you can go pick out the patio pavers the following day. In your rush to get the measuring done before the downpour hits, you and your partner realize that you actually were on two completely separate pages for the entire design conversation. He was thinking she meant one thing and she was thinking he was saying another. You try to calmly (and quickly) resolve the issue when one person finally gets annoyed and slips in an eye roll, the other person catches the eye roll and starts yelling, the first person starts shouting about how the other person’s idea will never work, and an all brawl starts in the backyard while the rain comes pelting down and neighbors come out to gawk.

OK, I may have made that last part up…but you get the picture.

Working together so much (and with so many different ideas and opinions) over the past few months has really taught Eric and I a lot of great coping/conflict resolution/drinking strategies. However, one of the best things we have learned is that sometimes you just have to take a deep breath, calm down, and remember that what you are doing is supposed to be fun and that you are making memories together.

Over the past month or so Eric and I have been trying to just keep everything light and fun and focus on the quality time we are spending together. We have even turned a few of our little projects into “DIY Date Nights.”

My friend Melissa over at Loving Here and I were talking the other day about how important it is to keep things as fun and as stress-free as possible when working on big projects like this with your husband. Melissa and her husband Wyatt have taken on, if I’m being honest, even more complicated projects than Eric and I have yet to date. If you haven’t checked out her “Young House Love” style blog yet you need to do so! Right now they are in the midst of a major kitchen renovation and I’m completely shocked and impressed by their progress!

We know that we are not the only ones out there looking to spruce up their home a bit – whether it be an entire overhaul or just a little updating to an existing room, many of us are looking for a fresh look this time of year. We thought it would be fun to do a little joint giveaway for our readers to say “thank you” for supporting us (and our many DIY successes and failures) and to give you the opportunity to win a DIY Date Night Gift Package for your and your significant other!

Below is our giveaway entry options. If you have used Rafflecopter before it should recognize you –  if you see your name  on the right hand side next to “enter to win” just go ahead and enter our giveaway using as few or as many of the giveaway entry options as you would like! If you are not familiar with Rafflecopter, it’s super simple to use! You only have to log in with your Facebook account or email address once and from then on you will never have to do it again for any other giveaway on any blog! Once you are logged in, click whichever entry options you would like to do (let’s be honest, we all do them all – best chance to win that way, right?) and once you have done the given task hit the green button letting Rafflecopter know you completed it. Whatever entries you earned for that task will show up in the top bar. When you have done them all it should say 10/10 complete!

Thanks again to everyone who supports Melissa and I, and best of luck to all of you!

That is too funny! When Chris and I were working on hanging up the frames I told him if we could get through that we could get through everything. ;) I just wanted him to be as excited about hanging stuff up as I was…. and he wasn’t. LOL.

I can’t wait to see all your projects! I am jealous of your craftiness.

haha that’s awesome. Hanging stuff is the WORST! Eric’s such a perfectionist and I’m a “if it doesn’t look crooked lets move on” type person. I’ve gotten to the point where I just do it myself now because I don’t want to deal with it lol. That was a lot of frames you guys hung too! Good for you for not killing each other during all that! :)

What a great idea, Lindsay! I will definitely be checking out your friend’s blog, too! I know exactly what you mean about the couple’s stress that comes with projects. I had originally thought our hectic schedules with each project would be peaceful and bring us closer, but I have been proven wrong, lol. It’s a strain. We are constantly working closer together, but not without a need for a break or two. :)

LOL! It’s OK I totally thought that same thing when Eric and I first started working on stuff. Nope :) Hey – I also wanted to let you know I nominated you for a blog award today! Check out my post from today – I hope you will consider joining in on the fun! :)
