Our DIY To-Do List | What’s On Yours?

Written by Lindsay Ropella

Eric and I are DIY addicts, plain and simple.

When we purchased our home two years ago this summer we had a list a mile long of all the projects that we wanted to do to this place. Although it seems like we are never making as much progress as quickly as we would like, when I think back we really have accomplished quite a bit in a year and a half. From remodeling basically our entire kitchen to doing crazy things like hanging an old ladder on the wall in our living room, our house has changed a lot since the day we signed the papers.

I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but it seems like we always go DIY crazy in Spring and Summer. We still have a few more months on our “get out of debt” plan so we can’t do anything major to the house at the moment, but man have we compiled quite the list.

With Spring and Summer right around the corner, I've been enjoying putting together our DIY to-do list with my husband. See what's on mine and share yours!

I feel like I need to mention that this is obviously a “DIY wishlist” more than it is a current to-do list, and it is very much being added to and changed quite frequently. We have a lot of big projects on this list which we know will happen over years and not months, but it’s fun to dream and keep track of everything we’d like to someday see accomplished.

The one big thing though that is very much on our radar to try and accomplish sometime before the year is out is to redo the floors in our home. I’m not kidding, they are bad. In fact, there is one intersection in our house where four different types of flooring from the 1980’s come together to shoot the sh*t. It’s so crazy that I had to attempt and post a picture of the array of flooring options available just on our first floor alone.

With Spring and Summer right around the corner, I've been enjoying putting together our DIY to-do list with my husband. See what's on mine and share yours!

Some of the smaller things on our to-do list include:
– putting in a garden
– replacing all the door handles
– replacing the toilets and vanities in both bathrooms
– repainting the downstairs bathroom
– repainting the office (making stripes, yay!) and putting in a new doorway with a glass door
– purchasing new dining room chairs and finding a coordinating chandelier
– putting a new overhead light in the kitchen
– painting the inside of the shower and tub in both bathrooms white using this stuff
– redoing the landscaping in our front yard
– replace the bedroom carpeting upstairs
– refinishing some vintage pieces of furniture
– touching up the paint in each room around the baseboards and the ceiling

After replacing our flooring, the next big project we really want to do (see, we have this already all planned out guys) is to put finish the fence in our backyard. We currently have a white fence running the length of our backyard and we think it would be nice to be able to finish off the sides and fence in the backyard. Stella would be so excited to not have to be stuck on a leash she would poop herself and I’m sure it would be a plus for future children and/or resale value as well.

A few other large projects include installing a brick patio in the backyard, installing some outdoor lighting, replacing the air conditioner (yawn), and finishing off the basement.

I know this list is extensive and a bit all over the place, but hopefully it gives you an idea of the types of projects you can expect to see here on the blog over the next few months. Working on these types of projects has really been a bonding experience for Eric and I, and one of those things we didn’t really discover we enjoyed doing together until after we were married. I enjoy discovering all the home improvement tasks Eric randomly knows how to do, and learning together the ones that are new to both of us.

So tell me, do you enjoy doing projects with your guy? What are some things you have on your to-do list for this Spring/Summer? Let me know in the comments below!

Our DIY list is so long right now and just keeps getting longer with every project I complete :P Oh house projects! It’s so fun to have a house that you can make your own though.

Isn’t that funny how it seems to grow instead of shrink once you start working on things. :) I’ve been loving watching your projects and can’t wait to see more!

I wish I were more DIY inclined. All of those things sound super scary. I’m hoping when we get a house that my husband’s lumberjack instincts kick in so he can do lots of stuff. All I want to do is start a garden and have a fire pit.

Haha well we started with things like painting the walls and switching out the faucet and slowly progressed from there. :) I’m sure you will both be rockstars at it once you slowly start doing things! I was SHOCKED at what I discovered Eric knew how to do..I even surprised myself some days! ;)

I hear ya,we had to do that for a while as well. We’ve definitely been enjoying the house, but it can be a lot of work sometimes too. ;)
